Antalya, Turkey – In a grand ceremony, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy unveiled the Antalya Library, the largest in the Mediterranean region. The inauguration is part of a nationwide initiative to establish 100 libraries commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic.

Built by Antalya’s Kepez Municipality, the sprawling library covers 9,000 square meters, boasting an impressive shelf length of 10 kilometers and a capacity to host 2,500 visitors. Attendees at the opening ceremony included Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, AK Party Antalya Province Chairman Ali Çetin, and Kepez Mayor Hakan Tütüncü.

Minister Ersoy highlighted the significance of the Antalya Library in transforming the city into a modern tourism and culture hub. He emphasized the commitment to building 100 libraries across the country, marking a milestone for the Republic of Türkiye’s centennial celebration.

During his speech, Ersoy acknowledged the unique aspect of the library’s construction, praising Mayor Tütüncü for undertaking the project without seeking financial support from the ministry. Tütüncü expressed gratitude to his colleagues and unveiled the library’s features, including a 350-person hall, an art gallery, and five themed libraries, with a book capacity of 1 million.

Antalya Governor Şahin emphasized the city’s increasing need for more and larger libraries, reflecting the evolving role of libraries as social hubs in the digital age. He noted that while information was once confined to thick books, libraries now serve as vital community spaces.

The Antalya Library stands as a testament to Turkey’s commitment to cultural enrichment and education, reflecting its dedication to fostering a knowledge-driven society. The inauguration marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to expand access to literature and promote learning opportunities for its citizens.
